Relive the Sydney of the 20s!

The magic of silent films… The lights dim, the screen fires up and as the images dance up on the screen the music will transport you to another world… Join us for an afternoon of unforgettable cinema!
Le Voyage dans la lune is a 1902 French black and white silent science fiction film.  It is based loosely on two popular novels of the time: Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon, and H.G. Wells’ The First Men in the Moon. It was extremely popular at the time of its release, and is the best-known of the hundreds of fantasy films made by Méliès.  A Trip to the Moon is the first known science fiction film, and uses innovative animation and special effects, including the well-known image of the spaceship landing in the Moon’s eye.

The Silken Ladder – opens tonight

Come see the opera that Rossini wrote that opens with the line ‘you fathead!’.

Giulia and Dorvil are secretly married despite the wishes of Dormont, Giulia’s guardian and tutor, who has plans for her to marry Dorvil’s friend Blansac. Dorvil secretly visits his wife every night by climbing up a silken ladder that Giulia lowers from her balcony. Meanwhile, Giulia has a scheme to divert Blansac’s amorous attentions toward Lucilla, her cousin, who, she believes, would make an excellent wife for him.
There are the usual quota of secret assignations and unexpected arrivals but will everything end happily? This one act farsa comica is packed with lots of sparkling melodies and comic efficiency.

The Silken Ladder (La scala di seta) opens tonight, Friday September 21, at The Independent Theatre. Written by Rossini in 1812 for the Teatro San Moisé in Venice. Performed tonight in true comic fashion! Make sure you make it here by 8pm to ensure you don’t miss out on those sparkling melodies.

"The General" (1926)

Long before the modern days of digital movies and surround sound, more than a hundred years ago, magical images flickered on a screen to the astonishment of patrons seeing a moving picture for the first time. These first cinema goers were captivated by the wonders of cinema, sitting in their seats in awe of what they had seen for the first time in history and so the birth of modern storytelling began.

The cinema would fill with people not knowing what to expect. The lights would dim, the screen would fire up and as the images danced up on the screen music would transport them to another world.

“The General” was voted the most popular silent film of all time.  A very special show.

Join us for a night of unforgettable cinema!

Opera by Candlelight 2012

Hi opera lovers!

I just finished up a wonderful weekend of Opera Highlights with a fantastic cast from Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and New Zealand. Once again the stately Albert Hall in Canberra proved an excellent venue to share the highlights of opera with sold-out audiences.  Starting with Carl Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’, we enjoyed performing highlights by Rossini, Liszt, Balfe, Puccini and Dvorak, and even included some West Side Story.  I had an especially wonderful time playing Verdi’s ‘I Vespri Siciliani’ with a brand new countermelody written especially for this concert.  Thank you to the audience for all their enthusiasm!

Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming events!

Australian Flute Festival 2011

Well I just finished up a very exciting weekend at the Australian Flute Festival in Canberra!  So many master classes to attend and concerts to see it was a feat to fit them all in… Highlights include seeing Aldo Baerten, Molly Barth and Denis Bouriakov perform in concert.  Molly is really into 20th Century extended techniques, and her concert gave inspiration for new composers to keep an ear out for (Salvatore Sciarrino, Frederic Rzewski and John Fonville to name a few).   Aldo is not only a dynamic performer but an equally articulate teacher, and  Denis of course was incredible in concert with his speedy fingers.

My favourite masterclass was ‘Inside a Flute Section’, run by members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Janet Webb, Rosamund Plummer and Lisa Osmialowski and their insights were very interesting on the different roles and challenges flautists face when playing in an orchestra.

Here is a sneaky photo from the final concert with all the artists performing new work ‘Angry Tunes’ by Michael Rosiak.  It was a fun piece based on the iPhone app Angry Birds! (You can see Peter Sheridan up the back playing his contra bass flute!).

A Toast to Melba

We’re having great fun preparing our tribute to the marvellous Dame Nellie Melba!

This 150th anniversary has been eagerly anticipated, thanks largely to Ann Blainey’s award winning biography “I Am Melba”.  Anecdotes drawn from this hugely enjoyable and scholarly book form the basis of our tribute.

The arias and songs which built Melba’s extraordinary career mirror parts of her incredible life. Her rebellion against her loving but authoritarian father; the tragic deaths of her mother and sister; her tumultuous marriage and separation; the estrangement from her son; her affair with the claimant to the French throne: her own life combined all of the ingredients of grand opera!

This concert presents some of Melba’s best-loved virtuosic arias: the thrilling “Shadow Song” from Meyerbeer’s Dinorah; Violetta’s desperate clutch at happiness in “Sempre Libre” from La Traviata; Juliet’s innocent and melodious “Waltz Song”; and Gilda’s lovestruck “Caro nome”.

We are also celebrating one of Melba’s happiest artistic partnerships.  In the latter part of her career she travelled with the Australian flautist John Lemmone, who wrote dazzling flute cadenzas to accompany the diva (think of the famous “Mad Scene” in Lucia di Lammermoor).  Together soprano Kate Rafferty and I will re-create these instrumental and vocal fireworks!

I am also excited to be presenting two virtuosic flute pieces from Lemmone’s repertoire: Godard’s “Grand Waltz” and Lemmones own toe-tapping “Fantasia on Scottish Airs”.

This concert will be presented in Melbourne as the highlight of this year’s Melba celebrations at the Scots Church on September 24.  Canberra audiences will enjoy special previews at the Street Theatre on September 2nd and 3rd.

We look forward to welcoming you to this celebration of an extraordinary Australian!
